4 weeks to go

Hey Kiddies,

Just a quick reminder that Summative Presentations start NEXT WEEK. If you have not gotten your media product together for your presentation, you better do that as soon as possible. With any luck, we'll finish presentations with a few classes to spare.

This week we'll be doing a simple little film genre assignment that involves one day of research in the computer lab and a short presentation in class. Also, I'll do doing a brief check with each group this Wednesday/Thursday so I know that you'll be ready.

Good luck and work hard. I'll close with a few more Mr. Patterson movie review Haikus:

IRON MAN 2

You seen the first one?
This one is about the same
Both of which I like

GREEN ZONE

Matt Damon runs lots
It's like Bourne Identity
Without a story

KICK ASS

Lots of violence
Some of it was super fun
Some was very dull

THE LOSERS

Mindless action fun
Done with both style and humour
So, of course, it bombed

New Dates and Deadlines

Hey Thug-lodites,

Just a quick note today.

1. Summative Presentations will begin on May 25th, after the long weekend. I'm giving you an extra week to get these things ready. Don't let me down.

2. Presentaiton outline sheets were given to you last class. Make sure you get them done and return them to me by next class. It's a mark out of 5 so don't let it slip.

That is all,

What's new

Hey Punklings,

I know it's been a while since anything has been up on this site. We have not had much due lately but I figured I'd hop on here to keep your heads wrapped around things to come.

Summative Stuff-

You have been given the summative assignment. I'll repost the summative up on this site shortly. Just a quick note about the summative: After a bit of soul searching, I've decided to allow groups of 3 instead of just partners. However, if you are working in a group of 3 that means my expectations of both quality and quantity go up. If you're working in a group of 3 you need to talk to me to make sure I approve you media product. It needs to be large enough that I know everyone is going to contribute.

Movie Language Test

This is the first part of the summative you're doing for marks. It's on Monday or Tuesday depending on when your class is. You need to know all the film terms I gave you on those handouts and be able to discuss all those other elements we talked about like cinematography, editing, colour and speed. It will take the whole period. If you are going to miss the class, let me konw why. (FASHION SHOW IS NOT A LEGIT REASON. IT'S EXTRA CURRICULAR.)

Where we are at...

Hey Earthlings,

Just wanted to give you guys a heads-up about things.

1. We've read several articles at this point, more than enough for your journal entries. I'll give you until the end of next week (April 15th/16th) to get them done.

2. I hope you finished the website-evaluation exercise. I'll be marking those over the next week or so. They're looking good so far, very thoughtful work (for the most part)

3. After a very brief look at video games (just a couple of periods) we'll be launching into the film unit. Be ready: This unit contains your summative assignment worth 30% of your final mark.

In the spirit of the movie unit, I now provide you with a couple of film reviews. In the need to save time, I have written them in Haiku form:

HOT TUB TIME MACHINE

Not very funny
I think that I am too old
For gross out humour

REPOT MEN

Actually not bad
Violent with some good ideas
Filmed in Toronto

THE GHOST WRITER

Roman Polanski
Thinks he is Alfred Hitchcock
He comes pretty close

New Journals

Hey Thuglings,

We're now onto our next unit in Media Studies: The Internet. In this unit, I like to do things a little differently when it comes to your journals. During this unit, we'll be reading a wide variety of articles in class dealing with a variety of internet related issues. We'll probably read about 5 or 6 of these things over the next 3 to 4 weeks.

Your journals will take the form of responses to any 3 of these articles you like. What do I mean by a response? What I mean is that you should consider any of the following questions:

Do you agree or disagree with the article?
Is it well written?
Are there any mistakes?
Did you learn anything new?
Do you have any personal experience that relates to the subject of the article?
Do you have any future predictions for the subject of the article?
Anything else you can think of.

These will not be due for a while but don't fall behind on them and then rush them at the end.

Have Fun,
Patterson

Music Unit - Assignment

Hey Monsters,

You now all have the music unit assignment. I've gone over them with you in class. Here is that same assignment posted below, just in case you lose it (or leave it on your desk...which some of you did).

MUSIC UNIT PROJECT:
Marketing a Star of Tomorrow

Time for a little wrap up on our media unit in music. We’ve spent a lot of time over the last few weeks talking about why certain bands/performers get famous and stay popular. While the music they perform is undoubtedly part of the reason behind their success, it is far from the only reason. Many of the most important decisions for an artist are made before their first song hits the airwaves. With that in mind, I present the following challenge to you: You are going to market a new music sensation.

Here are the steps:

· You will create a fictitious band/performer. To help ensure that your creation is thoughtful and detailed, I have provided a template to fill out some basic information. You may, of course, add any additional details you so desire.

· You must present your imaginary discovery to the fine people at MCI records (aka Mr. Patterson’s Class), explaining in detail why they should put their time and money behind this group/person you’ve discovered.

· To help give weight to this presentation, you must provide at least 2 additional creative ideas of your own to help SELL your performer(s). Some examples of these might include:

· Lyrics to one of their songs
· Cover art for their debut CD
· A copy of one of their songs
· Photos from a live concert
· Testimonials from fans
· The band’s website
· A live interview with the star themselves
· T-Shirts, action figures or any other form of merchandizing
· A taped radio interview
· A promotional poster
· A clip from their yet-to-be-released video
· Anything else you can come up with

What you produce is important but even more important is that you can explain how you are going to be able to MARKET and SELL these ideas. You oral presentation should explain:

Ø Who will be buying their music?
Ø Where should they perform? What cities? Countries? TV appearances?
Ø What attitude/image are they going to project? Why?
Ø Mechanizing ideas
Ø Career Direction

The Details:

Groups: Up to 3 people (NO MORE)

Presentations begin the week of March 1st. On that day you will present your performer, hand in your information sheet and anything you have produced. Your presentation should be approximately 5 minutes in length, but feel free to go over.

Marks Breakdown:

Info Sheet /10
Presentation /10
Products /15
Effort and Preparation /5
Total /40

Good Luck and Rock On!!!
